Why Mental Toughness Matters

Mental toughness is required of all of us, and how strong we are mentally will influence just how successful we are in life. Mental toughness boils down to your ability to consistently produce results, regardless of the circumstances or situation. For athletes, that means producing the goods even if carrying a small injury, dealing with poor weather or under pressure as the clock ticks down. It’s what separates champions from participants. Serena Williams is perhaps one of the greatest examples of mental toughness. Arguably the greatest tennis player of all time, she can produce whether it’s match point, breakpoint or just another point to pick up.

An athlete would be unable to consistently perform at such a level if they did not have mental toughness. It’s necessary for success. If you want to achieve the best possible results, then you need a strong measure of mental toughness. Athletes have it in spades and are able to consistently push through the pressure, face an opponent, and come out on top.

Mental Toughness Matters

When we explore the depths of it, it’s important to understand it isn’t about simply going through the motions. We still have to be focused and engaged in producing a high level of performance. It isn’t about merely finishing, it’s about finishing on top. It’s easy to produce a performance worth talking about when everything is going great. What of your performance when the chips are down?

Building Mental Toughness

One of the most important aspects of building mental toughness is constantly reminding yourself that you possess far more strength and heart than you realize. Far more than you credit yourself with. The only limits are those perceptions you allowed your mind to develop. If you feel tired, remind yourself that you control your body. If you want to give up, remember that you hold the power. You can fight on, you can push harder, everything else is just a mental block. You are capable of more than you ever realized.

No matter what activity you’re tackling, visualization is a good place to start. This is the point at which you take a dream and start to transform it into a tangible goal. It isn’t daydreaming, it’s a powerful way to allow you to overcome limitations. If you’re striving to achieve something you haven’t achieved before, then you will need to break down the barriers. You can try visualization through meditation or simply taking a walk in nature.

Visualize

Visualize your success in your mind and allow yourself to ride the rushing wave of accomplishment that comes with it. Once you visualize it, you will find overcoming mental blocks an easier proposition. Once you taste the potential glory that comes from achieving your goal it makes it much easier to maintain your motivation. Motivation is something that will help bolster your mental toughness.

When you feel doubt creeping in, have faith. Maintain mental toughness and work on developing a full suite of skills. You have to trust in yourself, in the team you have surrounded yourself with, and in your ability to overcome anything. The only thing that can stop you is you. The only person who can truly hold you back is you. Apply your mental toughness to these situations and simply say no – no, you won’t be stopped and no, you won’t allow anyone else to dictate how you perform and proceed.

Your mental toughness will increase with experience. So, the harder you push yourself in life, the greater your results will be. You will see the difference you make by merely persisting and this will make mental toughness your greatest asset.
